Chandler news 'The League of American Bicyclists' has for the third time awarded Chander the coveted 'Bicycle Friendly Community' designation. This followed a detailed audit of its efforts to provide safe accomodation and facilities for cyclists.
Chandler crime rates are declining according to 'Chandler's Annual Uniform Crime Report'. The report shows a 22% decline in serious crimes. The police increase their staffing from 256 officers to 377 in the same time frame.
Kyrene, the K-8 district in west Chandler, spent 64 percent of its budget on teachers' and teachers' aides' salaries and benefits, instructional supplies, field trips and other classroom dollars. According to Arizona's Office of the Auditor General this ranks Kyrene No. 1 in Arizona in dollars spent in the classroom compared with other comparably sized public school district. Chandler Unified was close behind with 63.7 percent.
Chandler City Council has unanimously voted to increase the number of red light speed cameras to 12. The plan is to have these in place by the end of May.
Chandler City Council have in a 4-3 vote approved to increase impact fees by $6,000. As of June builders will have to pay the city a fee of $19,538 for each new single family housing start.
Chandler airpark is the center for much activity. The 14.5 acre Hewson Chandler Airport Center has broken ground and are scheduled to have 185,000 sq,ft. of industrial buildings finished in August. Total costs are estimated to run around $23 million. An office and condo project by the Phoenix based Biltmore Holdings is also underway. The total cost is estimated to run just under $3 million.
The national magazine, Prevention, in cooperation with the American Podiatric Medical Association has voted the city of Chandler No. 9 among American cities for walking and staying fit. That is up from the 23rd position from the year before. The ranking is clearly helped by the newly opened Chandler Paseo Trail, which is a 7 mile traffic-free walking environment along the banks of the Chandler Consolidated Canal.
A $100 million project including 350 condominiums and 100,000 square feet of commercial space is being planned just west of the Chandler Fashion Mall. If approved by the Chandler City Council the project will include 1,100 underground parking spaces, 12 buildings, clubhouse, pool & spa and upscale boutiques. The condos are planned to be in the $250k - $450k price range and in sizes between 850 - 2,500 sq.ft.
May 1st Proposition 201 will take effect in Chandler and other East Valley cities. It will in effect banning in all indoor public places including bars and restaurants. Smoking will be allowed on patios that are more than 20' from the entrance.
Chandler residents are protesting Allied Wastes proposed plans to expand their transfer station near Tumblweed park. At full capacity 700 garbage trucks would enter the facility daily. According the Chandler city officials the city is investing $40 million in the 205 acre recreation park and find the transfer station to be a poor fit for the neighborhood. They are looking at ways to prohibit large trucks from using Germann road. The City of Chandler opened its new Freestyle / BMX bike riding facility. The bike park is the second public bike park built by an Arizonia municpality.
Chandler voters gave their thumbs down to extend the Chandler airport with 850 feet. However, they approved the other 9 ballot questions covering parks, public safety, water, sewer, streets, museum and several other municipal building projects. All in all they approved $450 million in muncipal bonds.
Harkins Theatres open their 12 screen site at Chandler Crossroads. The 12 movie theatres will feature innovative luxury amenities such as high back rocking love seats, extra large wall-to-wall screens. Total capacity is 2,800 seats and 1,200 parking spaces.
Intel has announced that they will be starting construction on their new Chandler facilities in the summer of 2011. The project will be an expansion of Intels current factories at their Ocotillo sites in south Chandler and enable them to produce the next generation 22 nanometer process technology. Completion date is set for 2013 and the will create around 1,000 permanent jobs. This latest Chandler investment is expected to be in the $5 billion range and firmly confirms that Chandler is Arizonas center for high tech jobs. Already the city of Chandler hosts companies like Orbital, Microchip and Freescale. Currently Intel employs 9,700 workers in Chandler.
In 2009 the Chandler City Council approved a new patient tower at Chandler Regional Hospital. Construction is expected to start in the spring of 2012 would bring about 1,000 construction jobs with it. The tower will add around 110 beds, 32 intensive care units and a new emergency care facility. All in all the tower will span some 150,000 sq.ft. over 5 stories. Completion is scheduled for summer 2014 and is anticipated to cost $130 million. It will add around 200 permanent staff when fully operational. It is anticipated that the current construction boom in Chandler will help on the Chandler real estate market
The Chandler City Council has decided to upgrade the Sunset Library at Ray and Rural to the tune of $500,000.
